Are Spirits Visiting You? Understanding Spiritism and Its Dangers

Updated: May 19

Many people wonder if spirits are visiting them, especially after the loss of a loved one. This blog explores what spiritism is, why communicating with the dead is dangerous, and how to resist wicked spirits, drawing on biblical principles and references.

What is Spiritism?

Spiritism is the belief or practice of attempting to communicate with the spirits of the dead, often through mediums or rituals. This practice is rooted in the idea that the dead can interact with the living, offering guidance, comfort, or information. Followers of spiritism believe that these communications can provide closure in grief or insight into one’s future.

However, the Bible warns against such practices, highlighting that they open the door to deception by wicked spirits. In essence, spiritism is more than a simple curiosity; it’s a significant spiritual risk.

Why is it Dangerous to Try to Communicate with the Dead?

Demons mislead people often by encouraging them to inquire of the dead. Those grieving may find false comfort through spirit mediums who provide information or imitate voices resembling those of deceased loved ones. This can convince vulnerable individuals that the dead are alive and that contacting them will help with their grief.

However, this comfort is misleading and dangerous. Demons can imitate voices and present information about the deceased (1 Samuel 28:3-19). The Bible teaches that the dead have ceased to exist (Psalm 115:17). Therefore, anyone who inquires of the dead is being misled by wicked spirits and acting contrary to God's will (Deuteronomy 18:10, 11; Isaiah 8:19).

For instance, when individuals think they are receiving messages from spirits, they often overlook the reality that these communications might be a ploy from demons, exploiting their grief and fear. It's critical to reject this dangerous bait used by these deceitful beings.

Breaking Free from Fear of Wicked Spirits

Wicked spirits not only mislead but also instill fear in the hearts of many. The Bible states that Satan and his demons are more vicious than ever because their time is short (Revelation 12:12, 17). Yet, there are numerous accounts of people who once feared demons but have successfully broken free from this fear.

How did they do this? By following biblical counsel and internalizing their faith. Many have found solace in prayer, scripture study, and engaging in supportive community discussions centered around spiritual well-being.

How to Resist Wicked Spirits

The first-century Christians in Ephesus provide a powerful example by destroying all items related to spiritism when they became Christians (Acts 19:19). This act was not just symbolic; it served to sever ties with practices that were contrary to their newfound faith.

To resist wicked spirits today, individuals should consider getting rid of anything connected to spiritism. This could include books, magazines, movies, posters, music, clothing with idols/images that reflect spiritism or even amulets used for protection against evil (1 Corinthians 10:21). By removing these items, they reinforce the commitment to seek guidance from God rather than the spirit world.

Additionally, individuals could focus on positive spiritual practices, such as:

  • Prayer and Meditation: Develop a routine of prayer and meditation to strengthen your spiritual defenses.

  • Community Support: Engage with a community of like-minded individuals who share your beliefs and values.

  • Education: Learn about biblical teachings regarding the spiritual realm to better understand the dangers of spiritism and how to recognize them.

Finding True Comfort and Protection

In light of all this, it becomes evident that spiritism is not just a harmless curiosity but a deceptive and dangerous practice. The Bible provides clear guidance on how to resist and break free from wicked spirits.

By rejecting all forms of spiritism and relying on God's wisdom, anyone can find true comfort and protection. It is essential to focus on nurturing a healthy spiritual life, rooted in faith, love, and community, rather than seeking closure or comfort through potentially harmful practices.

In conclusion, while it is natural to seek connection and understanding following the loss of a loved one, it is crucial to direct that desire toward God and the teachings of the Bible rather than the deceptive pathways offered by spiritism.
